DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

Darkened Corners I: Violence, Trauma and Recovery

Purchase Course

Course Objectives

Course 8 CEUs $88.00.

When I began composing this course it was in answer to the need for an online course in domestic violence and child abuse. In light of the recent tragedy I have addressed a more global perspective to the issue of violence as it will most certainly impact each of us in our lives and in our work. In the midst of this horror, my hope is for finding peace within ourselves and in the world.

Many of us acknowledge the dark and light side of human being as a natural matter of course in our profession. When, however, the darkness of violence explodes and envelopes us on such a global scale as the attacks on the WTC and the Pentagon Tuesday, 9/11/01, we are all likely to be shaken to our cores. Whether they be personal as in the case of family violence, social as in school violence or political as in Tuesday's attack, acts of violence impact us on our deepest level of survival and leave us questioning our sense of safety in the world.

Course Objectives

Course 8 CEUs $88.00.

The darkest part of being human is our capacity for violence. This is often hidden and unresolved in the recesses of our unconscious. Violent responses would ordinarily only emerge in reaction to an extreme threat. In families where there is ongoing violence, therapy can be like walking through a darkened corridor. In the intrapsychic maze of the violent family, survival and extinction are merged. There is often a palpable sense of fear, agitation and hypervigilance present in the family members. For the therapist there may be a heightened sense of needing to do 'the right thing' and not make any mistakes. There are many factors that contribute to violent relationships including personal history, childhood abuse, poverty, substance abuse, PTSD, and social value systems. It is the current opinion that to change these dynamics we need a multidisciplinary approach, legal, clinical, medical and social. In this course we will try to understand the stresses contributing to family violence and begin to bring light into these darkened corners.

By taking this online 8 CE participant will:

1) Be able identify indicators of physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect for spouses and elders
2) Identify treatment modalities.
3) Develop a treatment plan based upon client needs.
4) Be able to utilize community interventions.

Darkened Corners III: Child Abuse and Maltreatment

Purchase Course

Course Objectives

Course with 8 CE $88.00

There are few wounds that reach deeper than those inflicted in childhood by parents. There is no way to minimize the affect of having an adult, whom you depend on for survival and support, tease, scream, hit or fondle you as a child. It cuts into your core and leaves a scar for life. It is a gross misuse of power in a relationship that depends upon love, encouragement, attention and support to grow and flourish. Yet as parenthood is increasingly becoming a one person and divided family affair, the stress on parents that leads to such aberrant behavior is increasing rapidly. Approximately 3 million children are reported as abused in the United States yearly.

By taking this online 8 CE course the participant will:

1) Be able identify indicators of physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect.
2) Be able to recite reporting laws in CA or respective state.
3) Apply treatment modalities
4) Develop a treatment plan based upon client needs.
5) Be able to access community interventions and resources.

Domestic Violence: Victims and Offenders Assessment, Treatment, Intervention

Purchase Course

Course Objectives

Course with 7 CE $77.00

Many of us do not expect to repeat patterns from our childhood; yet, the wounds of domestic violence are deep. The trauma is something that needs serious attention, cognitive and behavioral awareness and deep healing before can be released. The figures and estimates in this course are only this, figures and estimates. There continues to be a great deal of shame and secrecy associated with this clinical challenge. The psychological, emotional, physical and spiritual issues are complex, confusing and often frustrating. It is estimated by some sources that it takes an average of five attempts for a victim to leave and abusive partner. We may not be the clinician that supports this client through all five attempts. We may just be one of the support people along the way It is common that when a client returns to an abusive partner they discontinue relationships wherein their secret is held as they reach for stability one more time in the arms of their abuser. as clinicians, we must be diligent to investigate , support and treat this underreported and complicated clinical and social issue. In this course we will look at the scope of the problem, the implications for intervention and treatment with victims and offenders and the children who may have borne witness to the event.
